Celebrating Black History Month - Final Week Highlights

Feb. 25 - Feb. 29

Hello Hue-man!

As Black History Month comes to a close, we reflect on the profound narratives that have shaped the African American experience. This final week, we continue to honor the legacies and achievements that have contributed to the fabric of our nation's history. Each day is an opportunity to celebrate and educate, acknowledge the struggles, and uplift the triumphs of the Black community.

February 25th: Muhammad Ali's Victory

On this day in 1964, Muhammad Ali, known as Cassius Clay at the time, shook the world when he became the heavyweight champion, a victory that resonated far beyond the boxing ring.

February 26th: Congressman James E. O'Hara’s Birth

On February 26, 1844, James E. O'Hara was born. He went on to become a prominent political figure, serving as a congressman from North Carolina and championing the rights and interests of African Americans during his tenure.

February 27th: John Willis Menard's Historical Speech to Congress

John Willis Menard made history on February 27, 1869, as the first African American to address the United States Congress. Although elected to Congress, Menard was not seated due to a challenge to his election, but his speech to the House defending his right to be seated was a landmark moment in American history.

February 28th/29th (Leap Year Day): Hattie McDaniel Wins Oscar

On February 29, 1940, Hattie McDaniel became the first African American to win an Academy Award, for her role as Mammy in "Gone with the Wind."

As we bid farewell to Black History Month, let's commit to carrying the legacy and achievements of African Americans forward throughout the year.

Up next, we will dive into Women’s History Month, highlighting great black women in history like Henrietta Lacks!

Best regards,
