Hello {{first_name|Hue-man}}!
February’s right around the corner, and you know what that means: Black History Month. The time to honor our history, amplify our culture, and let everyone know that Black excellence is not a February-exclusive event.
Let’s Get Ready

This year, we’re focusing on proactive celebration—not last-minute plans. Here’s how you can make the most of Black History Month:
1. Curate Your Playlist: From Mahalia Jackson to Kendrick Lamar, Black music chronicles our resilience and brilliance. Set the vibe early.
2. Support Black-Owned Businesses: Start researching now—whether it’s your local bookstore or your favorite online shop, your dollars make a difference.
3. Get the Knowledge: Dive into a new book or documentary. “Stamped from the Beginning” and “13th” are always a win, but maybe you’ve slept on some gems like The Black Panthers: Vanguard of the Revolution.
4. Plan Your Events: Hosting a brunch, book club, or even a trivia night? Lock down those RSVPs now, because you know how CP time works!
Why It Matters
Tomorrow marks the first day of Black History Month, a time to honor the legacies, struggles, and triumphs of Black Americans. But as we step into February, a recent decision from the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) signals a shift in how some federal institutions recognize cultural observances like this one.
Last month, the DIA announced it would pause official celebrations of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Black History Month, Pride Month, and other diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI)-related observances. This move aligns with an executive order from President Donald Trump, who recently began his second term and has been actively rolling back DEI initiatives across federal agencies.
While this decision primarily affects military and government employees, it raises broader questions: Who decides what history is worth recognizing? And what happens when institutions opt out of acknowledging contributions from marginalized communities?
Black History Month has never depended on government endorsement to thrive—it has always been powered by the people who live, document, and celebrate Black history every day. So while some institutions may step back, we step forward. This month, History in Hue will continue spotlighting the stories that shape our world, because Black history isn’t just a month—it’s every day.
